Who doesn’t know of or hasn’t had a Spritz? The Spritz, also known since 2011 as the Venetian Spritz by the IBA, the International Bartenders Association, is without a doubt one of the most popular aperitifs in Italy together with the Negroni and Americano. This cocktail has a deep-rooted history: it was created in Veneto, and from there it spread the ritual of the Italian-style aperitif first throughout the country, and then around the world. Its origins date back to 1800, when in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, troops of the Austrian Empire used to use a splash of sparkling water in local wines, as they were too alcoholic for them. It is precisely from spritzen, the German term describing this custom, that the name Spritz is derived! Did you know this story? INGREDIENTS
- Aperol ¼ cup (60 ml)
- Prosecco ⅓ cup (90 ml)
- Soda water to taste – (a splash)
- Oranges ½ slice
- Ice to taste
HOW TO PREPARE SPRITZ COCKTAIL
To prepare the Spritz, start by pouring the ice into a wine glass and filling it to the brim 1. Then pour the prosecco 2 followed by Aperol 3.
Finally a splash of soda water or very sparkling water 4. Add a little more ice and stir gently 5. Garnish with half a slice of orange and your Spritz is ready 6.
STORAGE
Drink your Spritz right away.
TIPS
No soda water siphon, no problem! It is very easy to find one in stores or even a disposable one at the supermarket. Alternatively, you can easily replace the soda water with sparkling water to make your Spritz.
And what about the best food pairings for a Spritz? Certainly cold cuts, cheeses that are not very aged, and nuts such as almonds, peanuts, cashews and hazelnuts. Excellent seafood combinations include salmon, cod, octopus, and crustaceans. What about vegetables? Absolutely! Try it with carrots, celery, fennel, or combined with delicious recipes based on spinach, zucchini, or eggplant… in short, let your imagination run wild!
